人類の将来を希望あるものにできるかどうかは、これまでの石油経済から「太陽経済」に世界が移行できるかにかかっています。
20世紀初頭の米国は世界最大の産油国でした。石油で動く自動車、飛行機、船、火力発電や石油化学、そして、電気を使う様々な電気製品などで圧倒的な経済力が米国の力の源泉でした。米国から石油を止められたことが日本やドイツを戦争に駆り立てた重要な要因でした。
しかし、オバマ大統領が選挙戦で指摘したように、今や米国は、世界の石油の3％の埋蔵量しかないのに25％を消費する世界一石油危機に脆弱な国家です。そして、製造業トップの地位も、日本やドイツに、さらに中国やインドに明け渡しています。
テレビ討論で、アラスカでの油田開発を主張したマケイン候補に対し、オバマ候補は、中東の石油への依存から米国が脱却する方法は、風力発電、太陽光発電であり、電気自動車だと主張しました。
大恐慌時代に、ルーズベルト大統領は、雇用とエネルギー対策のためにダムと水力発電所を作りました。ニューディール政策でした。オバマ大統領による21世紀のニューディールは、「太陽経済」をもたらすでしょうか。

オバマ氏は選挙キャンペーン中、「イランの指導者との交渉のテーブルにつくことを厭わない」と述べて、イランに対しては対話を中心に進める穏健派とのイメージが定着している。しかしオバマ氏の発言を注意深く聞いてみると、彼のイランに対する脅威認識は、マケイン候補やブッシュ現政権と大差なく、しかもイランが核兵器を保有することはおろか、「イラン国内でウラン濃縮を行うこと」すら許さないという立場を明確にしており、イラン核開発問題におけるアメリカの政策目標という点では、ブッシュ政権のそれとまったく変化はない。
オバマ氏は外交優先を主張しており、「軍事オプション」は「最終手段」だとしているが、すでにイラク、アフガンで手一杯の現状においてブッシュ政権でさえ外交を優先させ、「軍事オプション」は「最終手段」としてしか考えられないようになっている。もちろん時折空爆の脅威をちらつかせて脅したりはしているものの、現実のブッシュ現政権の政策も、外交的なあらゆるオプションを使ってイランを孤立させ、その態度を改めさせるというものであり、オバマ氏の政策とあまり変わりはない。しかもそのオプションはすでにもう限られたものしか残っていない。

What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice. So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.
Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.
In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.
